About
Hi, I'm Nico! I'm a sophomore at the University of Kansas majoring in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science. Born and raised in Costa Rica, I approach the world through a creative and analytical lens that merges creativity with technology. I'm focused on developing technology that pushes the boundaries of art, whether through interactive media systems, computer vision, or motion and visual design.

Structure-from-Motion 3D Reconstruction Pipeline
https://github.com/nicovillab/sfm-from-scratch
Python, OpenCV, NumPy, SciPy
- Built an incremental Structure-from-Motion pipeline using SIFT matching, RANSAC pose estimation, and triangulation, registering 47/47 cameras into a 21,020-point reconstruction with 0.165px reprojection error and 6.71° rotation error.
- Debugged two silent correctness bugs using ground-truth pose comparisons, fixing a mislabeled reference camera and a triangulation defect that produced outliers 1,377 units from a 5-unit point cluster, removing 487 stray points.
- Optimized a 65,000-parameter bundle adjustment using a sparse Jacobian over 43,014 observations, cutting reprojection error 13.6% (0.191px to 0.165px) in 90 seconds after resolving a robust-loss solver stall.
